Hosting provider OVH has launched a cloud service based on IBM’s Power8 processor architecture, an open source architecture tailored specifically for big data applications, and OpenStack.

IBM said Wednesday that the company is working with Docker, makers of an open source application containerisation technology, to further integrate both technology platforms. It also said it would host DockerHub, which provides a range of services for distributed applications deployed with Docker, on the SoftLayer platform. This marks IBM’s latest embrace of a high-momentum open source cloud project.

Following an announcement in August last year that IBM would invest millions in open sourcing its Power server chip architecture, the company said Thursday that it has released detailed technical specifications for its latest Power architecture, Power8, in addition to servers based on technology developed by its OpenPower Foundation.
