IBM makes cloud progress but reports another quarterly decline


IBM revenues continued to fall for a 17th consecutive quarter despite beating analyst expectations and demonstrating healthy growth in its cloud and data business units.

VMware announced revenues for the third quarter this year were $1.52bn, an 18 per cent increase on Q3 last year. But the company also reported a 26 per cent decrease in net income and a sequential decline in the quarterly revenue growth rate, which VMware president and chief operating officer Carl Eschenbach said was because sales discussions are taking longer now that its cloud services are entering the picture more frequently.

Red Hat buys eNovance in OpenStack play

Linux giant Red Hat announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire eNovance, an OpenStack integration service provider, for €70m. The acquisition will see Red Hat absorb eNovance’s engineering talent, which will lend to the company’s overall strategy of building OpenStack clouds and developing other tools for the open source platform.

Glasgow-based cloud computing firm iomart announced an increase of almost 40 per cent in annual revenues for the latest financial year, with pre-tax profits of £14.6m – up from £10.7m in 2013. The firm said the company’s strong results were due in large part to increased cloud uptake among SMEs and the mid-market.

Software giant Microsoft released its financial results Thursday evening, announcing quarterly revenues of $20.4bn for the period ending March 31, 2014 and total annual revenues of $63.45bn. In a call with analysts Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella said the company saw strong momentum in its cloud services as the company as it continues to transition towards a more mobile and cloud-focused businesses.

Rackspace Q3 sees mix of sun and cloud

Hosting and cloud services provider Rackspace reported mixed Q3 results Monday evening. The company brought in revenues of $388.6 million in the quarter ending September 30, slightly surpassing analyst estimates of $387.4 million. But Rackspace’s Q3 profit, 4.2 per cent, was down from previous quarters.
