The IEEE has formed a working group to explore the market opportunities and needs for a single-lane 25 Gb/s speed for server interconnects for Ethernet. The formation of the 25 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group comes shortly after Google, Arista, and Microsoft, operating as part of the recently formed 25G Ethernet Consortium released a specification enabling single-lane 25 Gb/s Ethernet and dual-lane 50 Gbps Ethernet links.

The 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium, which consists of some of the world's largest networking and cloud companies, have released a specification that optimises the Ethernet standard for internal datacentre traffic

A consortium of networking and cloud computing firms including Google, Broadcom, Arista Networks and Microsoft announced the availability of a specification optimised to allow datacentre networks to run over a 25 or 50 Gbps Ethernet link protocol. The companies claim the standard will enable more cost-efficient networking and better support the performance requirements of cloud services.
