How tablets are driving hospitality in the MENA region

21st February 2012

With the Cloud Computing World Forum MENA only a few days away, Business Cloud News writer Charlie Bestall sat down with Roger MacFarlaine, Vice President Technology at Moevenpick Hotels, to discuss how cloud-based technologies are having an impact on the hospitality sector in both the MENA region and across the globe.

Interview with Roger MacFarlaine, Vice President Technology, Moevenpick Hotels

CB: With new technology permeating every facet of modern life what changes have you seen in the hospitality sector?

RM: In today's world it is rare not to find an individual with the ubiquitous smartphone, iPad or mobile device in their pocket or handbag. With the plethora of mobile applications available to any individual and the immediacy of the digital medium, it is little wonder that many hotel chains are developing and launching their own mobile applications to capture some of the digital market audience. Although late [for the ball] many hotels are moving quite quickly to launch their service offerings.

CB: Do you see these apps being developed as an extension of current e-marketing strategies, or as a separate, more intimate way of reaching out and connecting with guests?

RM: Since guests look for immediacy and efficiency in hotel services, the apps, apart from making hotel reservations, offering views and directions, are going to cater for a more personalised approach with choices of food and beverage and room amenities (i.e. soft pillow) upon arrival and during their stay.

CB: In terms of how individuals are staying connected, do you see one particular device emerging as the ‘go to’ choice for consumers?

RM: The Apple iPad is taking over the world. Its big display, sleek looks and feel-good factor, with a world of applications and online services in tow; iPad sales are only going to grow. So it makes sense that our hotels compliment their existing service offerings with iPad options from rental, digital books and digital collateral in guest rooms.

Hotels with small libraries, club lounges/floors and also resort guests would benefit from 'digital books' to our guests i.e. novels, magazines and daily newspapers – even videos. Guest Relations and Concierge staff provide immediacy to guest requests and 'what's on' by constantly being connected to sites like CityMyWay.

A bold prediction from me is that in the very near future, PCs and desktop computers will morph themselves into devices like the iPad – but not for a little while yet. But stay tuned! Yes computers are shrinking and getting smaller and more powerful every day, but these smart phones and mobile devices that are internet-centric and constantly and easily connected are fast becoming the flavour of the decade. With so many apps that are customisable and tuned to users preferences and ways of work, no wonder these tablets of magic are taking over the world. Wait and see!
