EdgeCast figures show importance of CDN

27th July 2011

EdgeCast Networks, one of the world’s biggest Content Delivery Network (CDN) providers, has released figures confirming its number of customers has risen to over 3,000. The company has seen a dramatic growth since confirming its 2,000th customer, just six months ago.

EdgeCast has also confirmed it now serves a staggering 1.5 billion objects per hour through its global customer network, and is carrying approximately 4% of all worldwide internet traffic. While this figure still falls short of market leader Akamai (which serves between 15-30% of all web traffic), it’s a mighty rise to fame for a company only founded in 2005 and just recently celebrating its 100th employee.

“Online content continues to grow at breakneck speed, and companies are becoming more aware of the impact speed and availability has on their bottom lines,” said James Segil, co-founder and president of the Santa Monica-based company.

“These factors are creating a ‘perfect storm’ for CDN, and our performance and feature advantages are helping us win out over the competition.”

With application delivery and the rapid adoption of cloud computing creating more and more stress on networks, CDNs are fast becoming the vital link for companies whose very existence is reliant on consistently high-speed internet connection.

EdgeCast is one of several companies, including Akamai, who are leading the way in the CDN market. Recent new customers include Yellowbook, the online business directory spawned from the original Yellow Pages; AllSaints, a large online fashion boutique; and ShoeDazzle, a site that delivers millions of cost-conscious personalised fashion recommendations every month.

“As an online retailer offering a rich interactive experience, we need everything on our site to be fast,” said Wess Neatherlin, director of IT operations at ShoeDazzle.

“EdgeCast enables us to deliver dynamic and static content to our end users quickly and securely."

The company also continues to succeed in the challenging telecommunications market, licensing its software to some of the world’s biggest telecom operators.

“We have already enabled several major carriers to offer CDN services over their own networks via licensing and resale relationships,” continues Segil.

“Our experience has shown that telecom operators need expert CDN solution providers to help them navigate the complexities of building, deploying and managing content delivery networks, and I’m pleased they’ve chosen EdgeCast as the most comprehensive solution available.”

EdgeCast recently announced new points of presence in Miami and Madrid, and unveiled its Application Delivery Network, a platform that accelerates the delivery of non-cacheable content.

With customers continuing to flock to CDN as they buy into new cloud computing and internet-based, software initiatives, all eyes now turn to the Cloud Computing and CDN World Forum Asia in Hong Kong on 30th November and 1st December 2011.

The event is one of the first of its kind in the region to bring top organisations from the two technology types together, promising to reveal a true insight into the importance to combining cloud computing and CDNs in the near future.
