SAP Planning for Cloud is part of SAP’s strategy of bringing once clunky ERP services to a wider enterprise audience

German software giant SAP is making available a cloud-based planning platform the combines social collaboration with analytics that generate insights into project KPIs. The move is part of SAP’s broader strategy, which sees it aim to bring more slimmed down versions of its ERP platforms to a wider audience.

Built natively on SAP HANA-based cloud architecture, SAP Cloud for Planning is a platform as a service which embeds social collaboration and analytics directly within the context of the project planning process.

“Our mission was simple – build a modern financial planning solution in the cloud with the look and feel of a consumer app, and bring collaboration and analytics where they belong – within the context of the planning process,” said Steve Lucas, president, Platform Solutions, SAP. “We wanted to bring something different to market than what’s currently available in the cloud.”

The company said the platform, which is being pitched beyond IT to financial planners and line of business heads, enables projects stakeholders to track progress by following the “natural flow” of a project.

Robert Kugel, senior vice president and research director, Ventana Research said effective collaboration and data-centric planning accuracy are correlated (though not necessarily causally related), a view SAP is clearly embracing with its latest tools. It’s also part of SAP’s broader strategy which sees it trying to bring slimmed down yet fully featured ERP platforms to wider audiences within the enterprise.
