Atos acquired IT services specialist Bull Group for $844m and intends to consolidate cloud, cybersecurity and big data services under the Bull brand

Software, consulting and hosting firm Atos announced this week that it has entered into an agreement to acquire French-owned IT service provider Bull Group. Atos said the acquisition will help bolster its capabilities around cloud services, cybersecurity and big data.

Bull, which offers datacentre services, cybersecurity services and cloud hosting with particular expertise in high performance computing, operates in over 50 countries and has combined annual revenues €1.3bn. Atos has offered $844m for the company.

At the close of the acquisition Atos, which mainly provides managed services and systems integration services, said it intends to create a dedicated entity under the Bull brand focused on big data and cybersecurity.

Thierry Breton, chairman and chief executive officer of Atos, said: “Bull’s highly recognized teams in advanced technologies such as high computing power, data analytics management, and cybersecurity ideally complement Atos’ large scale operations.”

Breton said that the acquisition will better position the company to leverage quickly growing opportunities found at the confluence of big data and high performance computing. The company believes the market for big data services is growing at 40 per cent per year, and is expected to reach €12bn by 2015.

Philippe Vannier, chairman and chief executive officer of Bull Group said the acquisition will help create a big data and cybersecurity powerhouse that will be able to leverage more scale in both R&D and its ability to bring its services to market.

The acquisition is expected to close at the end of this summer.
