NEC Laboratories Singapore will mobilise industry and academia around big data and surveillance to improve social infrastructure

Adding to its global R&D efforts NEC has announced a  research centre that will look to innovate around big data, cyber security and energy efficiency. NEC Laboratories will be based in Singapore.

NEC says that the NLS will help foster closer collaboration between the Singapore government, local academic institutions and private industry to help develop products that leverage the company’s existing technological innovations around data mining, cyber-security, urban surveillance and smart energy.

The company hopes the innovations will be used to help make social infrastructure better in emerging markets in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.

“The NLS capitalizes on NEC’s advanced technologies in order to create new value while flexibly engaging in joint research with locally-based partners and proactively participating in a variety of field trials,” said Nobuhiro Endo, president of NEC.

“Moreover, the NLS aims to accelerate the time-to-market of new technologies that help contribute to the resolution of a broad range of business and social concerns,” he added.

Leo Yip, chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board welcomed the move to establish the new research centre, adding that research in analytics and cyber-security has been identified as a huge growth area in the country. Singapore’s government already actively coordinates a number of cross sector research initiatives aimed at making urban ecosystems safer and improving the way public infrastructure is managed and maintained.

The NLS with be housed at NEC’s Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore, and it is the fifth research centre established by the company in recent years; other NEC has set up research laboratories in Japan, America (split between New Jersey and California), Germany and China.
