Sprint has tapped IBM for an update to the Sprint Velocity infotainment platform

Sprint has tapped IBM for an update to the Sprint Velocity infotainment platform that allows drivers to sync car settings with the cloud.

Over the past year Sprint has been partnering with a number of service providers for a range of technologies which have enabled the company to realise its vision for a cloud connected vehicle, including Aeris Communications, an M2M platform designer and Airbiquity, which has developed a technology to bridge mobile and vehicle apps.

“With the adoption rate of smartphones steadily on the increase, users have come to expect their preferences to transfer from one device to another. Transfer of your personalization and customization settings to the connected car is the next logical step for automotive manufacturers looking to drive innovation in a very competitive market,” said Bob Johnson, director of development for Sprint Velocity.

As part of the recently announced collaboration Sprint will be using IBM’s MessageSight, a management and communications system for M2M sensors found in vehicles, and has integrated the technology into Sprint’s new Velocity Service Bus, the platform allowing smartphones and tablets to connect to the vehicle. The technology also has the capacity to interact with traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.

The offering launches today and will enable not just map delivery, location tracking and mobile unlocking (some of the more traditional vehicle M2M offerings), but will also offer the ability to sync cabin preferences like radio stations, climate control systems, and seating positions with the cloud so drivers can easily transfer settings over to other vehicles.

“Cars today have become mobile datacentres on wheels,” said Rich Stomp, managing director, IBM. “From recalling in-vehicle infotainment preferences to preferred routes, seamlessly integrating all of the customized services provided to drivers can be a complex task. In the era of ‘you,’ IBM MobileFirst solutions are a key ingredient in enabling companies such as Sprint to deliver solutions that help automotive manufacturers create cars customized for the individual – not the masses.”
